On September 21st, Mrs. Simpsons 3rd period Biotech class extracted cheek DNA. They swished Powerade in their mouth to get the cheek cells out, which carry their DNA. Then, they spit the Powerade back into the cup. In order to properly extract their cheek cells, they needed a salty liquid. They used Powerade because of its high salt content. After they got the Powerade into the test tube, they put a soapy water solution into the Powerade and combined them into their mixed soapy water and Powerade. They then proceeded to tilt the test tube and dribbled in ice cold alcohol (EtOH). They added the alcohol because your DNA cannot be seen in water, but when put in alcohol, it becomes a solid.
